Chantix is a drug that is prescribed for people who want to stop smoking.

NEW FDA CHANTIX WARNING

The Food and Drug Administration has issued an announcement that the smoking cessation medicine Chantix (varenicline) may put some patients at risk of heart problems.

The agency has notified health care professionals and patients that the Prescribing Information for this drug product will be strengthened to inform the public that use of varenicline may be associated with a small, increased risk of certain cardiovascular adverse events in patients who have cardiovascular disease. This safety information will be added to the Warnings and Precautions section and the patient Medication Guide.

The FDA said it reviewed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 700 smokers with cardiovascular disease who were treated with Chantix or placebo. While cardiovascular adverse events were infrequent overall, certain events, including heart attack, were reported more frequently in patients treated with Chantix than in patients treated with placebo. The events included angina pectoris, nonfatal myocardial infarction, need for coronary revascularization, and new diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease or admission for a procedure for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease. The FDA said it is continuing to evaluate the cardiovascular safety of Chantix and is requiring the manufacturer to conduct a large, combined analysis (meta-analysis) of randomized, placebo-controlled trials. The agency said it will update the public when additional information is available.

The agency said health care professionals should be aware that smoking is an independent and major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and smoking cessation is of particular importance in this patient population. The known benefits of Chantix should be weighed against its potential risks when deciding to use the drug in smokers with cardiovascular disease.

Nicotine is the chemical responsible for creating the cravings to continue smoking.

Chantix has some disturbing side effects that may lead to psychiatric problems requiring long term treatment for persistent depression. Some people taking Chantix have suicidal thoughts and or homicidal thoughts.

Some reports of people on Chantix have also had some medical conditions such as Steven Johnson Syndrome or liver damage and blackouts or seizures.

Accidents while on Chantix may include car accidents, fall down injury from passing out.

Chantix works by blocking the nicotine receptors in the brain – thus halting the cravings for smoking, but users should understand the side effects and risks of taking Chantix.

Chantix also works by stimulating the release of low levels of dopamine and other chemicals in your brain to help reduce the signs and symptoms of withdrawal. Because of the nature of how your brain chemicals work, there are some side effects to taking Chantix.
