Minocycline is part of the family of antibiotics called tetracyclines. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic. Minocycline is a stronger version, and contains serum levels 2 to 4 times that of tetracyclines.

Created by the drug manufacturer Lederle Laboratories and distributed under the brand name Minocin.

It is used mostly for the treatment of acne in young adults. It is also used to treat lyme disease and other immune type illness. It works like many of the tetracyclines by halting the growth of bacteria.

Other known side effects include a host of vision related problems, the worst being total blindness. Vision loss and or blurred vision have been reported.

Warnings for Minocycline

Do not use Minocycline if you are pregnant or may become pregnant, as it may harm the fetus. Be aware that use of Minocycline will make any birth control pills less effective. Minocycline can pass in the breast milk and can affect both teeth and bone development.

Minocycline can become toxic if taken passed the expiration date listed on the box or container. The danger of taking old outdated Minocycline is the possibility of kidney damage or failure.
