Obesity is a growing problem in the United States to the point where many officials are beginning to label it as a public health issue.
Such monikers are usually reserved for diseases such as cancer and HIV, but the country is overweight, and many people are working to burn off the extra pounds and avoid the potential problems that come with this extra weight. This is where the Hydroxycut products have come into play.
Hydroxycut and Rhabdomyolysis
Unfortunately, it seems that the only time these products are mentioned in the media these days is when a serious problem arises, as appears to be the case with the Hydroxycut weight loss product line that’s manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences, Inc. Below is an overview of the issue.
The problems with Hydroxycut are growing in number, and to date at least 23 people who have used them have reported serious side effects. One person has tragically died after using them.
Specifically, the relatively less dangerous side effects include:
- Seizures from Hydroxycut
- Hydroxycut liver failure
- Liver damage
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Cardiovascular disorders
- Kidney failure
- Rhabdomyolysis from Hydroxycut
Unfortunately, as serious as these side effects are, they are not the most dangerous ones associated with this product line to this point.
Those side effects include several different types of liver damage, including jaundice and raised levels of enzymes in the liver, which can lead to irreparable liver damage and ultimately the need for a liver transplant.
Questions are being rasied about the possiblity of having elevated liver enzymes associated with the use of Hydroxycut products.
If you doctor has done blood tests and found either alanine transaminase (ALT) or aspartate transaminase (AST) enzymes present, it may indicate that the liver is leaking these enzymes into the blood stream. Possible liver damage could be linked to the use of Hydroxycut products. A possible solution could be a full liver transplant if there is a great amount of liver damage.
FDA Warning on Hydroxycut:
As a result of these reports, the US Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has recently released a statement that leaves no room for doubt in regards to the severity of the problem.
In the statement, the FDA warned all consumers to stop using these products immediately, and that an investigation was beginning to attempt to determine the cause of these side effects. At this point, no central cause has been identified, but the risks are severe enough that the FDA has overtly requested the use of Hydroxycut to stop.
